Dr. Subodh Kumar Pokharel has spent more than three decades treating what Nepal has long found difficult to name. He is a Senior Sexual Health Specialist, the founder of Mata Manakamana Arogya Clinic and the Nepal Institute of Human Sexuality, and a former member of the Constituent Assembly of Nepal. He is also an author, poet, lyricist and filmmaker — work that has carried sexual health education far beyond the walls of a consulting room.

A patient who cannot say the word will not describe the symptom. My first job is to make the room safe enough for the sentence.

Early career

Medical training and first years of practice

Qualified MBBS and began clinical practice, moving steadily toward the sexual and reproductive health work that would define his career.

Founding

Mata Manakamana Arogya Clinic

Established a private clinic in Kathmandu offering confidential consultations in sexual medicine — then, as now, a rarity in Nepal.

2012–2013

MHS, then DHS in human sexuality

Awarded the Master of Human Sexuality in December 2012 and the Doctor of Human Sexuality in December 2013 by the South Asia Institute for Human Sexuality.

2013

Elected to the Constituent Assembly

Elected under the proportional representation system to the assembly that drafted the Constitution of Nepal, carrying public-health concerns into the drafting room. Honoured with the Constituent Assembly medal in 2019.
